It's been a few months and have added a bunch of new roses and finally got most of them in the ground.  Most are old garden roses from the middle 1800's to about 1920 or so.  I've been told that most are not good for breeding, but are more museum pieces.  Oh well, I'm going to give them a shot anyway.  I've done some late season pollinations with some species roses on some of the older roses to see if I can somehow bridge some breeding issues that may have existed.  I'll know in a few months.

April 4, 2013

Rose breeding season is quickly approaching here on the California Central Coast.  Most of my roses have well formed buds and lots of them.  The first to bloom were Thrive!, Rugosa Alba, Eyeconic Lemonade and Eyeconic Pink Lemonade.

Thrive!

This is a fairly new release from Dr. Jim Sproul.  It has great bloom color that does not come out in this photo.

Rugosa Alba

I managed to get plenty of pollen from this rose.  I hope to spread this around on some hybrid teas like Olympiad, Fragrant Perfume, Peace, Queen Elizabeth and a couple more this year.  Tetraploid X diploid should produce some interesting results.  If they take they should be triploids (if I understand the genetics) and once blooming.
I may also throw pollen of a few minis as well.

Open pollinated seedlings from 2012.  Mostly they are 1-72-1 and Rugosa seedlings.

These potted roses are my new breeders.  The majority are old garden roses.  There are a couple of newer varieties and one species rose, Rosa roxburghii or the Chestnut Rose.

These are new to my garden this year.  Most of these are not real common breeders, but they have been listed as being relatively.  My Floradora is getting a bunch of flower buds this and I hope to use it extensively both for pollen and seed.  Crépuscule is the one rose that I'm really looking forward to working the daylights out of.

So my 2013 rose count is 70 different cultivars.  That does not include about ten or so that I'm trying to root.  Most of those were sent to me fro RHA members.
